A Welsh composer who wove the lyrical magic of Dylan Thomas's words into haunting music, alongside a formidable cycle of symphonies.
Daniel Jones composed thirteen symphonies, each a rigorous essay in sound that builds a grand architectural vision. Born in Wales in 1912, he maintained a childhood friendship with Dylan Thomas, sharing a deep creative bond. Jones refused confinement to a single compositional doctrine, moving fluidly between serialism's intellectual demands and tonality's emotional resonance. His vocal music, especially the luminous settings of Thomas's 'Under Milk Wood', captured the play's humor, pathos, and uniquely Welsh cadences. A quiet, dedicated figure, his work bridged modernist thought with the enduring power of lyrical storytelling. Jones died in 1993.

Daniel was born in 1912, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
