A powerful Vatican administrator turned pastoral leader, he navigated the global mission of the Church and the challenges of the Naples archdiocese.
Crescenzio Sepe's life in the Catholic Church has been a journey from the central machinery of the Vatican to the front lines of a historic diocese. A canon lawyer by training, he spent a quarter-century in the Roman Curia, holding key roles in the Secretariat of State and the Congregation for the Clergy. His administrative prowess was recognized by Pope John Paul II, who made him a cardinal and appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, putting him in charge of the Church's missionary work worldwide. In 2006, he traded the global portfolio for a local one, becoming Archbishop of Naples. There, he faced the intense pastoral demands of a passionate, sometimes troubled city, working to revitalize faith and address social issues. His tenure, which ended in 2020, bridged the papacies of John Paul II, Benedict XVI, and Francis, marking him as a significant figure in modern Church governance.

Crescenzio was born in 1943, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
