A heavy metal institution that evolved from hardcore punk fury into a swampy, Southern-fried groove, defining a sound for a generation of outsiders.
Emerging from the Raleigh, North Carolina punk scene in 1982, Corrosion of Conformity began as a blistering hardcore act, a direct sonic assault. Their journey, however, was one of molten transformation. Through a turbulent sea of lineup shifts, with only guitarist Woody Weatherman as the fixed point, they slowly absorbed the sludgy riffs of Black Sabbath and the gritty soul of the American South. The addition of vocalist Pepper Keenan in the early 90s catalyzed their defining era, yielding albums like 'Deliverance' that married punk's anger with a weighty, blues-inflected swagger. They became architects of a distinct sound that resonated deeply with fans of metal's heavier, more thoughtful side, proving that intensity could be both cerebral and physically overwhelming. Their legacy is not one of static perfection, but of restless, noisy evolution.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Corrosion was born in 1965, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
