A rock-solid defender and natural leader, he anchored the Dutch national team's defense for over a decade, becoming the first captain to lift a major trophy for the Netherlands.
In the post-war years of Dutch football, Cor van der Hart was the defensive cornerstone. A commanding centre-back with a formidable physical presence and an astute reading of the game, he made his debut for the Netherlands in 1955 and quickly became indispensable. For 11 years, his calm authority and precise long passes from the back organized the Oranje defense. His career pinnacle arrived in 1963, not in the famous orange shirt, but with his club, FC DWS. As their captain, he led the Amsterdam side to a shocking Eredivisie championship, a triumph for a modest club against giants like Ajax and Feyenoord. He later returned to his boyhood club, AFC DWS, as a manager. While later generations like the Total Footballers captured global imagination, van der Hart represented an earlier era of grit and steadfast leadership, setting a standard for Dutch defenders.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Cor was born in 1928, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

He was the first-ever captain to lift the Eredivisie trophy (the modern league championship) for a club from Amsterdam.
His son, Cor van der Hart Jr., also became a professional footballer, playing as a midfielder.
He spent almost his entire playing career in the Netherlands, unlike many Dutch stars of later eras.
After retiring, he had a long career as a youth coach and scout for AFC DWS and other Amsterdam clubs.
