The foundational bassist of Styx whose steady groove anchored the band's rise, while his private health battle reshaped his role in the group.
Chuck Panozzo's story is woven into the very fabric of classic rock. Growing up on the South Side of Chicago, he and his twin brother John formed the nucleus of what would become Styx, with Chuck on bass. His solid, melodic playing provided the essential foundation for the band's ambitious blend of hard rock and soaring theatricality, driving hits from 'Lady' to 'Come Sail Away'. As Styx ascended to arena-filling fame in the late 1970s and early 80s, Panozzo was the quiet constant on stage. His life took a difficult turn when he was diagnosed with HIV in the 1990s, a health crisis that forced him to step back from the relentless touring schedule. His eventual public disclosure made him a rare figure in the classic rock world speaking openly about living with HIV. In a partial return, he became a part-time, special guest member of the band's reunion, a living link to its history and a symbol of resilience.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Chuck was born in 1948, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

He is the fraternal twin brother of Styx's original drummer, John Panozzo.
Panozzo taught himself to play bass on a $20 instrument purchased from a Sears catalog.
He is of Italian descent, and the band's name was inspired by the river from Greek mythology.
In the band's later touring years, he often performed for a portion of the set, sharing bass duties with a replacement player.
