The relentless, driving bassist whose pummeling rhythms and business acumen provided the furious backbone for Black Flag's hardcore revolution.
Chuck Dukowski was the engine in the machine of Black Flag. Born Gary McDaniel, he adopted his stage name and brought a ferocious, almost industrial intensity to the bass guitar, creating the relentless, churning foundation for the band's early, seminal sound. Joining in 1978, he was not just a musician but a co-architect of the band's DIY ethos, helping run their influential label, SST Records, from its inception. Dukowski was the pragmatic businessman and relentless tour booker, often the one answering phones and arranging the grueling cross-country circuits that spread the hardcore gospel. His stage presence was confrontational and physical, a perfect match for Henry Rollins's volcanic energy. While internal tensions led to his departure from the band in 1983, his imprint was indelible. He later formed the band SWA and continued working with SST, maintaining his commitment to underground music's independent spirit. Dukowski's legacy is that of a foundational force—the one who helped build the infrastructure that allowed the punk explosion to happen.
