An Irish golfing hero whose majestic two-iron at the Ryder Cup sealed one of the sport's most dramatic and emotional victories.
Christy O'Connor Jnr carried a famous name in Irish golf, but he forged a legacy entirely his own, defined by one glorious shot under unbearable pressure. The nephew of the legendary 'Himself,' Christy O'Connor Sr., he emerged from the shadow to become a formidable player on the European Tour, known for his powerful swing and affable nature. While he won tournaments, including the British Masters and the World Cup of Golf with teammate Eamonn Darcy, his moment of immortality arrived at The Belfry in 1989. In the climactic singles match of a tense Ryder Cup, O'Connor faced the world's premier player, Fred Couples. On the daunting 18th hole, with the match and the Cup on the line, he struck a pure 2-iron shot that soared 229 yards to within four feet of the pin, a blow so perfect it broke Couples' resolve. The victory, sealed by that shot, was a watershed for European golf. Later in life, he found success on the Senior Tour and as a celebrated golf course designer, forever remembered as the man who delivered when his continent needed him most.

Christy was born in 1948, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
