Biography

In the harsh wilderness of 17th-century Massachusetts, Anne Bradstreet performed a quiet revolution with a quill. A well-educated Puritan wife and mother who crossed the Atlantic on the *Arbella*, she wrote poetry not for publication, but for herself and her family. Her brother-in-law, without her knowledge, took her manuscript to England, where it was published in 1650 as *The Tenth Muse Lately Sprung Up in America*. This volume made her the first published poet, male or female, of the English colonies. Her early work engaged with grand historical and philosophical themes, but her most enduring poems are later, domestic pieces. In verses about the burning of her house, the illness of a child, or her love for her husband, Bradstreet masterfully balanced Puritan devotion with a very human vulnerability, creating a poignant record of a woman's inner life on the frontier.

Generation X

1965–1980

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.

Chilly was born in 1972, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
