A fiery and ambitious duke who spent nearly 50 years trying to transform his Alpine duchy into a major European kingdom.
Charles Emmanuel I inherited the Duchy of Savoy at eighteen and immediately embarked on a relentless, often reckless, campaign to elevate its status. His nickname, 'Testa di Fuoco' or 'Firehead,' perfectly captured his impulsive and martial spirit. He dreamed of a restored Kingdom of Lombardy or even a crown in far-off Cyprus, launching wars against France, Spain, and neighboring Italian states. His reign was a rollercoaster of temporary conquests, like the seizure of the Marquisate of Saluzzo, followed by devastating losses. He nearly lost his own capital, Turin, to a French army. Yet, he was also a shrewd patron, expanding the University of Turin and commissioning grand buildings that gave Savoy a more regal air. His legacy is one of vaulting ambition that overreached its grasp, but which indelibly stamped Savoyard identity with a desire for greater power.
