A folk-rock troubadour who built a grassroots empire with Dispatch and channels his concert energy into fervent activism for social justice.
Chadwick Stokes makes music that feels like a gathering—earnest, communal, and charged with a desire for change. As the frontman of Dispatch, he was at the center of a word-of-mouth phenomenon; the band's independent ethos and marathon live shows, culminating in a 2004 free concert in Boston that drew over 100,000 fans, cemented their legacy as pioneers of the DIY rock movement. His work with the more politically charged State Radio and his solo material consistently intertwines melody with message, focusing on issues from indigenous rights to prison reform. Beyond the stage, he co-founded the Calling All Crows initiative, mobilizing fans into direct service and advocacy, making his career a seamless blend of artistic expression and hands-on activism.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Chadwick was born in 1976, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
