The mercurial Welsh voice who led Catatonia's Britpop charge before reinventing herself as a rootsy folk explorer and eclectic radio storyteller.
Cerys Matthews didn't just sing; she embodied a moment. As the frontwoman of Catatonia, her distinctive, caramel-and-gravel voice and witty, conversational lyrics became the soundtrack to the 'Cool Cymru' movement of the late 1990s. Hits like 'Road Rage' and 'Mulder and Scully' blended indie rock swagger with a uniquely Welsh sensibility, making the band and Matthews national treasures. At the peak of their fame, however, the pressures took their toll, and Catatonia's dissolution was abrupt. Matthews embarked on a remarkable second act, shedding the pop star persona for that of a musical archaeologist. She moved to Nashville, immersed herself in American folk and blues, and began releasing albums that were intimate, acoustic, and deeply personal. This evolution continued into broadcasting, where her BBC Radio 6 Music and Radio 4 shows reflect her boundless curiosity, weaving together folk, poetry, and obscure musical gems with the warmth of a shared discovery.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Cerys was born in 1969, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
