A globe-trotting football strategist who built formidable national teams and served as Sir Alex Ferguson's trusted lieutenant.
Carlos Queiroz’s career is a map of world football, dotted with challenges taken and respect earned. The Portuguese coach first gained international attention by guiding a gifted generation of young Portuguese players, including Figo and Rui Costa, to back-to-back FIFA World Youth Championship titles in the late 80s and early 90s. This established his reputation as a master organizer and tactician, a skillset that made him an invaluable assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United during two separate spells. On his own, Queiroz became the archetype of the international manager for hire, taking the reins of national teams from South Africa to Iran, Colombia, and Egypt. His most remarkable work was with Iran, whom he led to two consecutive World Cups (2014 and 2018), forging them into a disciplined and hard-to-beat unit. Often stern and always meticulous, his methods have shaped players and teams across continents, making him one of the most widely-traveled and influential coaches of his era.

Carlos was born in 1953, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
