A Spanish socialist who became a persistent voice for European integration and federalism during his long tenure in the European Parliament.
Carlos Carnero built a political career defined by a steadfast belief in a united Europe. Entering the European Parliament in 1994, he witnessed the continent's rapid transformation post-Maastricht Treaty. Rather than focusing on domestic Spanish politics, Carnero carved a niche as a dedicated institutionalist and constitutional thinker. He served as a key draftsman on reports concerning the future of the European Union, often advocating for stronger common foreign and security policies and more transparent democratic processes. His appointment to the presidency of the Party of European Socialists in 2006 reflected his role as a bridge-builder among Europe's center-left factions. For over a decade and a half, he worked within the complex machinery of Brussels, pushing for a more politically cohesive and socially progressive union.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Carlos was born in 1961, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
