A steadfast banker and statesman who steered Italy into the Euro with quiet integrity, later becoming its unifying president.
Carlo Azeglio Ciampi was not a career politician but a central banker who entered the fray when Italy needed stability most. His life was defined by a profound sense of civic duty, first as a soldier who refused to join Mussolini's puppet republic, then as a decades-long servant at the Bank of Italy, where he eventually became governor. In 1993, with the political system collapsing under corruption scandals, he was called to lead a technocratic government, applying a banker's rigor to public finances. His most lasting impact came as Treasury Minister, where his unwavering commitment and credibility were instrumental in qualifying Italy for the European single currency, a task many thought impossible. Elected President in 1999, he became a moral anchor, respected across the spectrum for his dignity and his constant advocacy for European unity, representing an older, quieter ideal of public service.
