Biography
Calvin Johnson co-founded K Records in 1982 from a basement in Olympia, Washington, creating a label that prioritized cassette-tape intimacy over studio polish. His band Beat Happening played minimalist songs with childlike melodies and Johnson's resonant baritone vocals, rejecting rock-star machismo entirely. The label's 'International Pop Underground' movement directly inspired the riot grrrl scene and encouraged thousands of bedroom musicians to record and release their own work. Johnson also fronted Dub Narcotic Sound System and The Halo Benders, and hosted a college radio show that amplified unknown artists. Beck and Modest Mouse released early material on K Records. Johnson never wavered from his founding premise: anyone can make music, and the means of production should belong to the makers. Olympia remains a haven for DIY culture largely because of his stubborn, radical insistence on independence.
