A fearless freestyle snowmobiling pioneer whose tragic death at the X Games led to immediate and lasting safety reforms in action sports.
Caleb Moore grew up in Texas, part of a family of action sports athletes, and found his calling in the high-flying, then-nascent world of freestyle snowmobiling. With his brothers, he pushed the sport's boundaries, transforming snowmobiles from utility vehicles into instruments of aerial ballet. His talent earned him four X Games medals, showcasing a blend of power and precision. During the 2013 Winter X Games, his life was cut short in a sequence that shocked the sports world. Attempting a backflip, he under-rotated, and the 450-pound sled came down on his chest. He walked away initially but later collapsed, suffering a heart injury that proved fatal days later. His death, the first in X Games history, forced a profound reckoning, leading to mandatory safety modifications to sleds, revised course designs, and a new, sobering awareness of the risks inherent in pushing extreme sports forward.
