The child voice behind Disney's Mowgli and Christopher Robin, who later traded the microphone for a camera as a wildlife cinematographer.
Bruce Reitherman’s voice is etched into the childhood memories of millions, though few know his name. The son of Disney animation director Wolfgang Reitherman, he was thrust into the recording booth as a young boy, lending his natural, unforced voice to two of the studio's most beloved characters: Christopher Robin in 'Winnie the Pooh and the Honey Tree' and, most famously, Mowgli in 'The Jungle Book'. His performance captured the curious, brave, and sometimes petulant spirit of the man-cub perfectly. Rather than pursue acting, Reitherman followed a different passion. He studied biology and zoology, eventually joining his father's former employer not as a performer, but as a filmmaker. He carved out a long career at Walt Disney Productions as a cinematographer and director, specializing in nature documentaries, earning an Academy Award nomination for the 1978 short 'The Living Planet'. His journey represents a unique Disney legacy: from the heart of its animated classics to documenting the real wonders of the natural world.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Bruce was born in 1955, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
