A shrewd Jamaican political strategist who led his party back to power and navigated the nation through the turbulent 2008 financial crisis.
Bruce Golding's political career was a long game of strategic maneuvering within Jamaica's vibrant democracy. Entering parliament in his twenties, he became a key figure in the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), known for his sharp intellect and organizational skills. After a period of internal strife and opposition, he successfully reunited the JLP and led it to victory in the 2007 general election, becoming Prime Minister. His tenure was immediately tested by the global economic meltdown of 2008, which hit Jamaica's debt-laden economy hard. Golding pursued an IMF agreement and austerity measures, painful choices that stabilized the economy but eroded his popularity. His term was also marked by the controversial handling of the U.S. request for the extradition of drug kingpin Christopher 'Dudus' Coke, an episode that created a domestic crisis and international tension. Golding resigned in 2011, leaving behind a mixed legacy of economic stewardship and political controversy.

Bruce was born in 1947, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
