A Portuguese farm dog whose claimed 31-year lifespan captivated the world before being clouded by controversy and a revoked record.
Bobi's story was one of rustic simplicity that captured global imagination. A purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo, a Portuguese livestock guardian dog, he spent his entire life in the rural village of Conqueiros. His owner, Leonel Costa, claimed Bobi was born in 1992 and had lived a life largely unchained and free-roaming, attributing his longevity to a diet of unseasoned human food and a calm environment. In early 2023, Guinness World Records certified him as both the oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever, surpassing a record held for nearly a century. Images of the grizzled, slow-moving dog made international headlines. However, skepticism from veterinarians and dog experts prompted an investigation by Guinness, which ultimately revoked the title due to insufficient evidence. Bobi died later that year, his true age a subject of debate, but his tale left a lasting mark on discussions about animal care and the verification of extraordinary claims.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Bobi was born in 1992, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

Bobi was a Rafeiro do Alentejo, a breed known for protecting livestock, not typically for extreme longevity.
His owner claimed he survived a litter culling as a puppy because he was hidden in a woodpile.
Guinness World Records required evidence including microchip data and statements from the Portuguese government's pet database for his certification.
The previous record holder for oldest dog ever was an Australian cattle dog named Bluey, who lived to 29 years and 5 months.
