A French racing maestro whose staggering 76 career wins in Porsches made him a quiet giant of endurance sports car racing.
Bob Wollek was a driver of immense skill and understated demeanor, a man who spoke more with the steering wheel than with words. Born in Strasbourg, he became synonymous with Porsche, piloting their machines to an astonishing 71 of his 76 career victories. His domain was the grueling endurance classics; he conquered Daytona four times and Sebring once, mastering the art of speed married to consistency. Known as 'Brilliant Bob' for his cerebral approach, he remained a fiercely private individual, often cycling to and from tracks. This habit led to profound tragedy in 2001 when, after a practice session for the Sebring 12 Hours, he was killed in a bicycle accident, cutting short the career of a driver who had become an institution in the paddock.
