Biography

Bob Sanders, nicknamed 'The Eraser' for his ability to nullify offensive mistakes, played football with a terrifying intensity that belied his 5-foot-8 frame. Drafted by the Indianapolis Colts, he immediately transformed a perennially soft defense into a punishing unit. His presence on the field was the single biggest factor in the Colts' 2006 playoff run, culminating in a Super Bowl XLI victory. The following year, his all-out style earned him the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year award. Yet, that same relentless physicality came at a cost, limiting him to just 50 regular-season games over eight seasons, making his peak performances all the more legendary within the sport.

Millennials

1981–1996

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.

Bob was born in 1981, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

Did You Know?

Despite his reputation as a hard hitter, he never received a fine from the NFL for an illegal hit.

He wore jersey number 21 in college but switched to 33 in the NFL as a tribute to his friend and former teammate, Colts running back Dominic Rhodes.

His official listed height of 5'8" made him one of the shortest starting safeties in modern NFL history.

He missed 78 regular-season games due to injury over his eight-year career.

“I play the game the way it's supposed to be played—full speed, full tilt, all the time.”
