An Australian novelist and biographer who stepped from the literary world into the heart of the nation's political life as the partner of a transformative prime minister.
Blanche d'Alpuget built a life across two powerful arenas: literature and politics. First establishing herself as a writer, she gained attention for her clear-eyed biographies, including a penetrating 1982 study of Bob Hawke that charted his rise long before he became prime minister. Her fiction, often set against Asian backdrops, won awards and demonstrated a sharp eye for character and conflict. Her personal relationship with Hawke, which began while both were married to others, became a subject of intense public fascination and scrutiny. After Hawke's divorce, their 1995 marriage placed her in the official role of prime ministerial spouse during his final term. Far from a passive figure, d'Alpuget brought a writer's intellect and a fiercely private resilience to the spotlight, navigating the complexities of public life while maintaining her own creative identity long after Hawke left office.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Blanche was born in 1944, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
