Alaska's fifth governor, a hotelier turned politician whose single term was defined by economic ambition and a fierce impeachment battle.
Bill Sheffield arrived in Alaska with twenty dollars in his pocket and built a fortune in the hotel business, a background that shaped his pragmatic, development-focused approach to politics. Elected as the state's fifth governor in 1982, he steered Alaska through a period of economic uncertainty following the completion of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. His administration prioritized job creation, infrastructure, and leveraging the state's natural resources, but it was soon engulfed in controversy. A grand jury investigation into allegations of improper contract steering led to an impeachment effort by the state House of Representatives in 1985; he was ultimately acquitted by the Senate. Choosing not to seek re-election, Sheffield later served for over a decade as the executive director of the Alaska Railroad Corporation, leaving a lasting imprint on the state's transportation infrastructure.
