A former astronaut who carried his experience in space directly into the halls of Congress, ultimately steering NASA itself as its administrator.
Bill Nelson's career is a singular fusion of space exploration and earthly politics. A Florida native with a law degree, he entered politics in the early 1970s. His lifelong fascination with space took a literal turn in 1986 when, as a sitting U.S. Congressman, he trained as a payload specialist and flew aboard the Space Shuttle Columbia. This made him only the second sitting member of Congress to orbit the Earth. For over three decades in the Senate, he was a steadfast champion for NASA, earning the nickname 'the Senator from Space.' His deep institutional knowledge and unwavering advocacy made him a natural choice to lead the agency he had long supported. In 2021, he was confirmed as NASA's 14th administrator, bringing a unique perspective as both a former policymaker who funded space missions and an astronaut who had lived them, tasked with guiding America's ambitions in a new era of lunar and Martian exploration.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Bill was born in 1942, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
