A technically masterful rapper whose complex, rapid-fire flow and monumental presence made him the first solo Latino hip-hop star to go platinum.
Christopher Rios, known as Big Pun, emerged from the hardscrabble streets of the Bronx, his immense physical frame matched by an even more formidable lyrical talent. Discovered by Fat Joe, he stole the show on guest verses with a flow that was both brutally powerful and astonishingly agile. His 1998 debut 'Capital Punishment' was a seismic event, a dark, witty, and emotionally raw masterpiece that showcased his ability to weave intricate internal rhymes at breakneck speed. Pun's success broke barriers, proving a Latino artist could achieve the highest commercial success in mainstream hip-hop. His career, however, was tragically cut short by health complications related to his weight. He left behind a slim catalog that continues to be studied for its technical brilliance and raw power, a foundational pillar of East Coast rap.

Big was born in 1971, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
