A mountainous, mustachioed English wrestler whose cheerful dominance made him a beloved Saturday afternoon television icon for a generation.
Shirley Crabtree Jr. wasn't always Big Daddy. He began as a formidable villain, a hulking brute teaming with the monstrous Giant Haystacks. But in the late 1970s, he underwent a transformation that captured the nation's heart. Shedding his dark persona, he emerged in star-spangled leotards, a walrus mustache framing his grin, and a signature belly splash that shook the ring. His matches, often against his former partner Haystacks, were less sporting contests and more theatrical spectacles of good triumphing over evil. For over a decade, he was the undisputed king of British wrestling's televised heyday, a symbol of playful, physical fun for children and families gathered around the TV.
