The mastermind who transformed Brazilian volleyball into a global dynasty, commanding respect and titles for both the men's and women's national teams.
Bernardo Rezende, called Bernardinho, built Brazil into volleyball's dominant program. His father coached the sport. Bernardinho first played as a setter for the national team. In 2001 he took over the Brazilian men's squad and imposed a system of technical precision, discipline, and mental toughness. The men won Olympic gold in 2004 and 2016, plus multiple World League titles. He then moved to the women's national team, leading them to Olympic silver in 2008 and 2012. His timeouts—loud, intense, often televised—became a trademark. The results made Brazil the benchmark for international volleyball. Bernardinho's approach combined deep tactical knowledge with an understanding of player psychology. He coached both genders at the highest level, winning Olympic medals with each.

The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Bernardo was born in 1959, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
