The melodic architect behind ABBA's timeless pop sound, whose songcraft later powered global stage musical sensations.
Benny Andersson's musical journey started in Stockholm's folk parks, playing accordion in his father's and grandfather's dance band tradition. He found early success with the Hep Stars, Sweden's answer to The Beatles, but his creative destiny was sealed when he began collaborating with Björn Ulvaeus. Together, with their partners Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad, they formed ABBA. As the group's primary composer and keyboardist, Andersson built the lush, intricate arrangements that gave ABBA's songs their irresistible and sophisticated sheen. After the group's hiatus, he refused to be confined by pop nostalgia, co-writing the ambitious musical 'Chess' and later seeing his ABBA catalogue ingeniously woven into 'Mamma Mia!,' a stage and film phenomenon that introduced his melodies to new generations. He continues to perform with his own big band, returning to the Swedish folk and dance music of his roots.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Benny was born in 1946, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
