The powerhouse drummer whose explosive, teenage talent helped propel Silverchair from a garage band to global grunge fame.
Ben Gillies was just 12 years old when he started jamming with schoolmates Daniel Johns and Chris Joannou, forming the band that would become Silverchair. His aggressive, precise drumming provided the thunderous backbone for their 1995 debut 'Frogstomp', recorded while they were still 15. Gillies anchored the band's sound through its evolution from raw grunge to ambitious art-rock, his playing growing more sophisticated with each album. After Silverchair's hiatus, he explored new musical avenues, fronting the band Bento and working on solo material, stepping out from behind the kit. His career is a testament to the raw, youthful energy that can ignite a worldwide phenomenon.
1965–1980
The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Ben was born in 1979, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
