Biography

For over half a century, Bazoline Estelle Usher was a quiet but formidable force for educational equity in the heart of the segregated South. Joining the Atlanta Public Schools in 1919, she rose to become the director of education for African American children, a position that made her the first Black person to hold an office in Atlanta's City Hall. From that unlikely desk, she worked tirelessly to improve resources and conditions for Black students and teachers, operating within a discriminatory system to extract every possible advantage. Her vision extended beyond school walls; in 1943, recognizing the need for character-building activities, she founded Atlanta's first Girl Scout troop for Black girls. Usher's legacy is one of dignified, persistent bridge-building, creating pathways of opportunity that would help prepare the city for the civil rights movement and eventual integration.

The Lost Generation

1883–1900

Came of age during World War I. Disillusioned by the carnage, they rejected the certainties of the Victorian era and built modernism from the wreckage — in art, literature, and politics.

Bazoline was born in 1885, placing them squarely in The Lost Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
