An Odisha economist and institution-builder whose decades of work fundamentally shaped the planning and development of his home state.
Baidyanath Misra was less a distant academic than a hands-on architect of Odisha's modern economic framework. Born in 1920, his long career was defined by a practical commitment to applying economic theory to the soil and society of his region. He served as Vice-Chancellor of the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology, steering education towards tangible rural needs. His influence extended deep into state governance, where he served as deputy chairman of the State Planning Board and chaired Odisha's first Finance Commission, roles that placed him at the heart of fiscal and developmental strategy for years. A prolific writer in both English and Odia, he used his columns and books to democratize economic thinking. Perhaps his most enduring legacy is the institutional infrastructure he helped create, including the Orissa Economics Association and the Nabakrushna Choudhury Centre for Development Studies, ensuring that the conversation on Odisha's progress would continue long after him.
1901–1927
Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.
Baidyanath was born in 1920, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
