A steadfast Islamic politician who broke a half-century of single-party rule to lead the state of Kedah.
Azizan Abdul Razak's political journey was one of quiet, persistent conviction. A lifelong member of PAS, the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, he worked for decades within the state of Kedah, building a base of trust in his rural constituency of Sungai Limau. His moment arrived in the political tsunami of 2008, when he was thrust into the role of Menteri Besar, becoming the first person from outside the dominant UMNO party to lead Kedah since Malaysian independence. His tenure, from 2008 until his death in 2013, was defined by navigating the complexities of coalition politics while adhering to his party's principles. Azizan was less a fiery orator and more a practical administrator, a man whose deep local roots and religious sincerity commanded respect across the political divide, cementing his place as a pivotal figure in Kedah's history.

Azizan was born in 1944, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
