A Canadian actor who evolved from teen idol to a thoughtful director and author, using his platform to explore identity and social issues.
Avan Jogia grew up in Vancouver, a creative kid with a Filipino-Indian father and an English-Welsh mother, a mix that would later inform his artistic perspective. His early career was defined by the whirlwind of teen television, most notably as the guitar-strumming heartthrob Beck on the hit series 'Victorious.' Rather than be confined by that image, Jogia deliberately sought complex roles, from a conflicted Cylon in 'Caprica' to a drug-addicted musician in 'Tut.' His restlessness led him behind the camera, directing music videos and short films, and into writing; his book 'Mixed Feelings' is a poetic exploration of navigating a multi-ethnic identity. Today, Jogia operates as a cultural polymath—acting, directing, and advocating—proving that a career born in Nickelodeon can mature into something deeply personal and artistically substantive.
1981–1996
The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Avan was born in 1992, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
