Biography

August Derleth was a literary dynamo from the banks of the Wisconsin River, whose output spanned regional novels, mysteries, and poetry. But his enduring impact was as an archivist and evangelist for the macabre. Horrified that his literary idol H.P. Lovecraft might be forgotten, Derleth co-founded Arkham House publishers in 1939 specifically to preserve Lovecraft's work in hardcover. This act of devotion single-handedly saved Lovecraft's stories from pulp magazine oblivion. Derleth didn't just curate; he expanded the so-called Cthulhu Mythos with his own stories, ensuring the tentacles of cosmic horror reached future generations of readers and writers.

The Greatest Generation

1901–1927

Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.

August was born in 1909, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.

Did You Know?

He sold his first story to Weird Tales magazine at the age of 16.

He was a close friend of the poet H.P. Lovecraft, and their extensive correspondence was later published.

He wrote a 100,000-word novel in two weeks while still a university student.

Beyond horror, he created the detective Solar Pons as a deliberate and authorized pastiche of Sherlock Holmes.

“It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out how the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better.”

— August Derleth
