A shrewd political survivor known as the 'magician' of Rajasthan, who mastered the art of comeback to govern the desert state for over a decade.
Ashok Gehlot's political story is one of resilience and quiet, strategic maneuvering. A loyalist of the Gandhi family, he carved out a durable base in Rajasthan not through flamboyance but through a reputation for soft-spoken, accessible governance focused on welfare schemes. His first term as Chief Minister began in 1998, but his defining characteristic became his ability to return to power. He led the Congress to victory in 2008 after a five-year hiatus, and then, against formidable odds, did it again in 2018, securing a full term that made him one of the longest-serving chief ministers in the state's history. Gehlot's tenure was marked by populist measures like free medicine schemes and a deft handling of party factions. Often operating from the shadow of louder national figures, he proved that in Rajasthan's shifting sands, consistency and a common touch could be the most powerful tools of all.

Ashok was born in 1951, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
