His dramatic paintings of George Washington and biblical epics shaped how millions of Americans picture their history and faith.
Arnold Friberg painted 'The Prayer at Valley Forge' in 1975, an image of George Washington kneeling in snow that schools and homes across America reproduced. After studying at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, he opened a Utah studio where his heroic, detailed realism suited religious subjects. Director Cecil B. DeMille commissioned a series of paintings for 'The Ten Commandments.' These works, used globally to market the film, earned Friberg an Academy Award nomination. He later turned to American history, producing the Valley Forge scene that became a staple of patriotic imagery. Critics called his work theatrical; popular audiences craved its clarity and moral grandeur. Friberg built a career on muscular, cinematic storytelling that brought grand narratives to life.
