The smoky-voiced face of French poetic realism, whose wartime choices shadowed a career defined by defiant charm and cinematic immortality.
Arletty was Paris incarnate. Born Léonie Bathiat in the working-class suburb of Courbevoie, she modeled her way into fashion and then onto the stage, cultivating a persona of witty, street-smart elegance. Her breakthrough came with Marcel Carné's poetic realist films of the late 1930s. In 'Hôtel du Nord' and 'Le Jour Se Lève,' her world-weary, sensual presence gave soul to a melancholic, pre-war France. Her defining role was as the luminous, unattainable Garance in the epic 'Children of Paradise,' filmed in secret during the Nazi Occupation. It was this period that defined her legacy off-screen: a romantic affair with a German officer led to her arrest after Liberation and a conviction for 'national unworthiness.' Arletty never apologized, famously quipping 'My heart is French but my ass is international.' She lived the rest of her long life as a complex symbol of artistic brilliance and personal defiance.

Arletty was born in 1898, placing them squarely in The Lost Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
