A one-club midfield stalwart whose loyalty and consistent performances made him a Hartlepool United institution for over a decade.
Antony Sweeney's career is a story of quiet dedication and remarkable longevity at a single club. The Middlesbrough-born midfielder joined Hartlepool United's youth system and made his first-team debut in 2001, quickly becoming a fixture in the side. For the next 13 years, Sweeney was the reliable engine in Pools' midfield, amassing nearly 450 appearances. He wasn't a flashy star, but a versatile, intelligent player known for his work rate, timely runs into the box, and crucial goals from midfield. His commitment saw him play under numerous managers and through promotions and relegations, embodying the club's spirit. After a brief final playing spell with Carlisle United, he moved into coaching, first back at Hartlepool and later as a first-team coach at Stockport County, applying the same steady professionalism he displayed on the pitch.
