A formidable English actress whose portrayal of EastEnders' matriarch Lou Beale created one of British television's most enduring and tough-minded characters.
Anna Wing was cast as Lou Beale in the new BBC soap opera 'EastEnders' in 1985 at the age of 70. Long before Albert Square, she was a stalwart of British theatre and television, working consistently from the 1940s onward with a no-nonsense presence. With her hair in a net and a glare that could freeze the Thames, Wing embodied an entire postwar East End attitude—resilient, judgmental, and fiercely protective of her family. Her performance set the show's gritty, emotional tone and made Lou a national figure. Wing left the series after three years, but the character's shadow loomed for decades. She returned to the stage and other TV roles, her career a testament to the power of an actor who knows exactly who they are.

Grew up during the Depression, fought World War II, and built the postwar economic boom. Defined by shared sacrifice, institutional trust, and a belief that hard work and loyalty would be rewarded.
Anna was born in 1914, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
