Biography

Angelos Sikelianos believed poetry could change the world. Bursting onto the Greek literary scene in the early 20th century, his work was a torrent of Dionysian energy, classical allusion, and prophetic vision. He saw in Greece's ancient past not mere history but a living force, a spiritual wellspring for a fractured modern world. With his American wife, Eva Palmer, he poured his fortune and passion into the Delphic Festival, a breathtaking revival of ancient drama, music, and athletic games held at the sanctuary of Apollo in 1927 and 1930. It was an attempt to forge a new universal humanism rooted in Greek ideals. Though the festivals bankrupted him, the ambition defined his life. His later poetry, written through the trauma of war and occupation, retained its lyrical power and cosmic scope, earning him repeated Nobel Prize nominations and solidifying his place as a national poet of transcendent aspirations.

The Lost Generation

1883–1900

Came of age during World War I. Disillusioned by the carnage, they rejected the certainties of the Victorian era and built modernism from the wreckage — in art, literature, and politics.

Angelos was born in 1884, placing them squarely in The Lost Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
