A visionary Polish climber who defied the impossible by proving the great Himalayan peaks could be conquered in the dead of winter.
Andrzej Zawada redefined the limits of high-altitude mountaineering. For him, the ultimate frontier wasn't just a summit, but a season. In the 1970s, when the Himalayas were considered strictly a fair-weather pursuit, Zawada became obsessed with the idea of winter ascents. As an expedition leader, he was a master logistician and a motivator who could instill his bold vision in others. His crowning achievement came in 1980 when he led the team that put Leszek Cichy and Krzysztof Wielicki on the summit of Mount Everest in February—the first winter ascent of the world's highest peak. This was more than a Polish triumph; it was a paradigm shift that opened a new, brutal chapter in alpine history. Zawada's legacy is etched in the ice of Lhotse, Everest, and other giants, where he pioneered techniques and a mindset that taught climbers to not just survive, but operate, in the planet's most ferocious cold.
