He steered the Faroe Islands into a new era as its first Prime Minister, turning a long-held dream of self-rule into a functioning government.
Andrass Samuelsen was a fisherman's son who became the architect of modern Faroese politics. His life was defined by the slow, deliberate push for autonomy from Denmark, a cause he championed as a leading figure in the Union Party. When the Home Rule Act finally passed in 1948, it was Samuelsen who was entrusted with the historic task of forming the islands' first government. His premiership, though brief, was foundational, focused on establishing the practical machinery of a self-governing nation—from fisheries policy to foreign representation. He governed with the steady, pragmatic hand of a man who understood that independence was not a single event but a daily practice, setting a tone of sober responsibility that would influence Faroese politics for decades.
