The last ruler of a dynastic dictatorship in Nicaragua, whose brutal regime fueled a popular revolution that finally overthrew his family's decades-long grip on power.
Anastasio 'Tachito' Somoza Debayle was not a politician who rose to power; he was born into it as the heir to a family dynasty built by his father. Educated at West Point, he embodied the fusion of military command and political control. As head of the U.S.-trained National Guard, he was the true source of authority in Nicaragua long before and after his official presidential terms. His rule was characterized by rampant corruption, brazen self-enrichment, and severe repression of dissent. The 1972 earthquake that devastated Managua became a metaphor for his governance; international aid flowed in, but much of it was siphoned off by the regime. This corruption, combined with the assassination of popular journalist Pedro Joaquín Chamorro in 1978, ignited a broad-based insurrection led by the Sandinista National Liberation Front. In July 1979, Somoza fled the country, ending 43 years of family rule. He was assassinated in Paraguay the following year, a violent end to a life defined by violence.

Anastasio was born in 1925, placing them squarely in The Greatest Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
