A pianist and composer who forged a singular sound where the gospel church, avant-garde jazz, and classical formalism meet in ecstatic conversation.
Amina Claudine Myers emerged from the rich musical soil of Arkansas, singing and playing piano in her Baptist church from childhood. That foundational experience—the call-and-response, the emotional fervor, the structural freedom—never left her. After studying composition in college, she moved to Chicago in the mid-1960s, plunging into the city's revolutionary Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM). There, her voice matured, blending with the likes of Muhal Richard Abrams. Myers is a musician of expansive reach: she can deliver a soul-shaking organ trio groove, lead a through-composed choral work, or explore abstract improvisation with equal authority. Her compositions often feel like ceremonies, building from hymnal simplicity to complex, polyphonic climaxes. As a performer, her presence is commanding yet deeply spiritual, whether she's singing her own poignant lyrics or letting the Hammond B-3 organ wail. She has carved a unique path that honors tradition while fearlessly charting new territory.

Born between the Depression and the end of WWII. Too young to fight, old enough to remember. They became the conformist middle managers of the 1950s — and the civil rights leaders who quietly dismantled Jim Crow.
Amina was born in 1942, placing them squarely in The Silent Generation. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
