Biography

Alva R. Fitch’s military career was forged in one of the darkest crucibles of World War II. He commanded an artillery battalion in the Philippines during the desperate defense of Bataan, an experience that ended not with a medal ceremony but with surrender and over three years of brutal imprisonment by Japanese forces. That survival shaped the rest of his service. Emerging from the war with a profound understanding of hardship and enemy tactics, Fitch transitioned into intelligence. His analytical mind and hard-won resilience propelled him through the ranks. He served as the Army's assistant chief of staff for intelligence at the height of the Cold War, navigating the complexities of the Berlin Crisis and the Cuban Missile Crisis, and later became deputy director of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Fitch represented a vital link between the gritty reality of combat and the shadowy world of high-stakes military intelligence.
