A spiritual leader who has guided the Muslim communities of the Caucasus through decades of seismic political change and religious revival.
Born in 1949 in what was then the Soviet Republic of Azerbaijan, Allahshukur Pashazade emerged as a pivotal religious figure during a period of intense state atheism. His ascent to the position of Sheikh-ul-Islam of the Caucasus, a role overseeing Muslims across multiple nations and Russian republics, was not merely an appointment but a testament to his deep theological knowledge and political acumen. He navigated the collapse of the USSR, steering the region's Islamic community toward a post-Soviet identity while advocating for interfaith dialogue and national stability in Azerbaijan. His leadership extends beyond the pulpit; as Chairman of the Religious Council of the Caucasus, he operates as a key diplomat between faith, state, and the diverse ethnic tapestry of the region, influencing social policy and religious education for millions.
1946–1964
The largest generation in history at the time. Shaped by postwar prosperity, the Vietnam War, the sexual revolution, and Watergate. They questioned every institution their parents built — then ran them.
Allahshukur was born in 1949, placing them squarely in the Baby Boomers. The events that shaped this generation — postwar prosperity, civil rights, Vietnam, and the counterculture — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
