The Swedish composer who gave generations of children a timeless soundtrack of playful melodies and gentle nature poetry.
Alice Tegnér didn't just write children's songs; she defined the soundscape of Swedish childhood for over a century. A pastor's wife and mother of six, she drew inspiration from the folk traditions of her native country and the simple rhythms of family life. Working as a music teacher, she found the existing songbooks for schools dull and uninspired. So she began writing her own—catchy, melodic tunes paired with lyrics that spoke of trolls in the woods, wandering kittens, and changing seasons. Collections like 'Sjung med oss, Mamma!' (Sing with us, Mama!) became ubiquitous in homes and classrooms. Her music, such as 'Mors lilla Olle' and 'Bä, bä, vita lamm', possesses a folk-like authenticity that has made it feel eternally familiar, a gentle, enduring force in Swedish culture.

Alice was born in 1864, placing them squarely in The Gilded Age. The events that shaped this generation — world wars, depression, and rapid industrialization — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
