A Jaffna mayor whose efforts at bridge-building between communities ended in an assassination that foreshadowed Sri Lanka's civil war.
Alfred Duraiappah's story is a tragic footnote in the prelude to Sri Lanka's decades-long ethnic conflict. A lawyer and politician from Jaffna, he represented a strand of Tamil politics that sought accommodation within the Sri Lankan state. Elected as the Mayor of Jaffna in 1970, he was seen by some as a pragmatic administrator and by a growing number of Tamil nationalists as a collaborator with the Sinhala-dominated government. His political stance, advocating for Tamil rights through parliamentary means, placed him at odds with the emerging militant separatist movements. On July 27, 1975, while visiting a Hindu temple, Duraiappah was shot and killed. The assassination, claimed by the fledgling Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), is often cited as one of the group's first major political murders. The gunman was reportedly Velupillai Prabhakaran, the LTTE's future leader. Duraiappah's death marked a violent turning point, signaling the eclipse of moderate Tamil leadership and the dawn of an era where armed struggle would dominate the quest for Tamil Eelam.
