A Russian skater whose explosive athleticism and dramatic artistry culminated in a flawless, dominant Olympic gold medal performance.
Alexei Yagudin's story is one of fierce rivalry and ultimate triumph. Emerging from the rigorous Soviet skating system in St. Petersburg, he was a prodigy known for his powerful jumping ability and intense competitive fire. His career became intrinsically linked with that of his training mate and eventual rival, Evgeni Plushenko. Their battle for supremacy pushed the technical boundaries of the sport. After a split from his longtime coach, Yagudin moved to the United States to train with Tatiana Tarasova, who refined his raw power into compelling artistic programs. The pinnacle came at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, where his two programs, set to 'Winter' and 'The Man in the Iron Mask', were masterpieces of choreography and execution. He skated with a commanding, emotional force, landing quadruple jumps with ease and winning the gold medal by a decisive margin. Though a congenital hip condition cut his competitive career short soon after, his Olympic performance remains one of the most complete and dominant in figure skating history.

The latchkey kids. Raised during divorce, recession, and the end of the Cold War. Skeptical, self-reliant, media-literate. They invented indie culture, grunge, and the early internet — then watched the Boomers take credit.
Alexei was born in 1980, placing them squarely in the Generation X. The events that shaped this generation — economic uncertainty, the end of the Cold War, and the rise of personal computing — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
