A Russian defenseman who built an eight-year NHL career not on points, but on a reputation as one of the league's most fearsome and uncompromising hitters.
Alexei Emelin's path to the NHL was a study in patience. Drafted by Montreal in 2004, he honed his craft for seven more seasons in Russia, developing into a stalwart for AK Bars Kazan in the KHL and winning championships. When he finally arrived in North America at 25, he was a fully formed product: a stout, left-handed shot who played with a palpable edge. Canadiens fans quickly embraced his brand of old-school, physical defense. Emelin's signature was the hip check, a technically difficult and increasingly rare art he executed with devastating consistency, often leaving opponents airborne. While he occasionally chipped in offensively, his value was measured in intimidation and defensive zone stability. After over 400 games with Montreal, his career wound down with shorter stints in Nashville and in Russia, his name remaining synonymous with a style of punishing, straightforward defense that has become a rarity in the modern game.

The first digital natives. Grew up with the internet, came of age during 9/11 and the 2008 crash. Highly educated, deeply indebted, slower to marry and buy houses. Redefined work, identity, and what it means to be an adult.
Alexei was born in 1986, placing them squarely in the Millennials. The events that shaped this generation — the internet revolution, 9/11, and the 2008 financial crisis — shaped the world they entered and the choices available to them.
